President Obama Announces Recipients of the 2010/11 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring

On November 15, 2011, President Obama announced nine individuals and eight organizations as recipients of the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring for 2010 and 2011. The White House press release is available at http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2011/11/15/president-obama-honors-outstanding-science-math-and-engineering-mentor-0.

Background

The White House established the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM) program in 1996. The program, administered on behalf of the White House by the National Science Foundation, seeks to identify outstanding individual mentoring efforts or organizational programs designed to enhance the participation and retention of individuals (including persons with disabilities, women and minorities) who might not otherwise have considered or had access to opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The awardees serve as exemplars to their colleagues and are leaders in the national effort to develop more fully the nation's human resources in STEM.

The award recognizes and underscores the past mentoring achievements of the nominee.

Awardees are invited to Washington, D.C. for an awards ceremony, recognition events, and meetings with leaders in Federal sector education and research. Traditionally, the awardees have been honored at a ceremony organized by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

The recipient's database from 1996 to the present can be searched at:
